Winter Snowglobes

Reindeer

On Thursday the 4th of December, our class drew and painted reindeer. First we drew the reindeer by the help of our fingers and hands. Then we outlined the shape of the reindeer in a black oil pastel. After that we painted the reindeer using red for the nose , brown for the body and green for the back round. We also came up with some creative ideas of what to add on to the reindeer.

Our Science Experiment

Today, we did Pneumatic experiments. Pneumatics is all about air pressure.

In our experiment, we wanted to see if a plastic bag filled with air could lift  a pile of books. We pierced a plastic bag with a straw then placed the books on top. After that we blew into the straw.

This resulted in the filled bag pushing the book up and lifting the heavy books.

History Artefacts

World War One Artefacts
On Wednesday Peter Monaghan brought in his Great Grandfather's bayonet that he swapped with a German soldier at the end of World War 1 in 1918.
Peter told us that his Great Grandfather, Private Patrick Ryan had fought in World War 1 and at one point was involved in a serious explosion in which his friend was killed.  Private Ryan survived the war and was given medals for his service and a medal for meritorious service.
Bayonets were designed to be attached to the barrel of a rifle to be used in close combat.
The bayonet has a metal scabbard and leather holder or Frog.

The symbol of an eagle's head is visible on the handle.

The British War Medal, 1914-18

Established on 26th July 1919.
Also known as 'Squeak'.

The silver or bronze medal was awarded to officers and men of the British and Imperial Forces who either entered a theatre of war or entered service overseas between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918 inclusive. This was later extended to services in Russia, Siberia and some other areas in 1919 and 1920.

Approximately 6.5 million British War Medals were issued. Approximately 6.4 million of these were the silver versions of this medal. Around 110,000 of a bronze version were issued mainly to Chinese, Maltese and Indian Labour Corps. The front (obv or obverse) of the medal depicts the head of George V.

The recipient's service number, rank, name and unit was impressed on the rim.

The Allied Victory Medal
Also known as 'Wilfred'

It was decided that each of the allies should each issue their own bronze victory medal with a similar design, similar equivalent wording and identical ribbon.

The British medal was designed by W. McMillan. The front depicts a winged classical figure representing victory.

Information about the medals was taken from the following website:
http://www.greatwar.co.uk/medals/ww1-campaign-medals.htm
Further details and information about these and other World War One medals and artefacts can be found there.

Sculpted Science: Turn Milk into Plastic!

 MAKING PLASTIC!

Have you ever heard that plastic can be made out of milk? If this sounds far-fetched, you may be surprised to learn that from the early 1900s until about 1945, milk was commonly used to make many different plastic ornaments. This included buttons, decorative buckles, beads and other jewellery, fountain pens, the backings for hand-held mirrors, and fancy comb and brush sets. Milk plastic (usually called casein plastic) was even used to make jewellery for Queen Mary of England! In this investigation we made our own casein plastic out of hot milk and vinegar.

All plastics are composed of molecules that repeat themselves in a chain, called a polymer. Polymers can be chains of either one type of molecule or different ones, which are linked together in a regular pattern. Also, in a polymer, a single repeat of the pattern of molecules is called a monomer, which can consist of just one type of molecule or include several different kinds.

Milk contains many molecules of a protein called casein. Each casein molecule is a monomer and a chain of casein monomers is a polymer. The polymer can be scooped up and moulded, which is why plastic made from milk is called casein plastic.

Our Historical Cycle Trip

On Wednesday, October 1st 2014 the fifth class pupils, Mrs Kelleher, Ms Kelly, and parents Geraldine Bonner and Eileen Murphy of Killeeneen N.S. cycled around Clarenbridge, Craughwell and Athenry parishes. We first went Geo-cashing around the parish and we found one Geo-cash, beside the monument near the Lynch's house in Lavally, in very bad condition with a loom band inside.
We then cycled to Lisduff and left our bikes in Lisduff Turlough and walked to the site of a hedge school called Scoil Cois Claí' and a corner where Anthony Raftery use to sit, play his fiddle and recite poetry.
Also in Lisduff Turlough we visited an old Mass Rock, Ms Kelly explained to us it's importance during Penal Times in Ireland.

When we returned to school we were all extremely tired but it was well worth it as we had a wonderful day!

Is it a liquid or a solid?

This is our science project and what we first did was got our ingredients and put them in a bowl. The ingredients we included were cornflour, water, a wooden spoon, a bowl and green food colouring.
We poured half a box of cornflour into a bowl. Then gradually poured water over the bowl and mixed until it looked and felt like custard. Then when you ran your fingers through it, it acted like a liquid.  But when you punched it , it became hard and behaved like a solid.  The cornflour particles are suspended in the water, so it flows like a liquid, but when you apply a force to it, the particles are locked together, acting like a solid.  As soon as the force stops, the slime goes back to behaving like a liquid.

Green Schools Committee

We have had one Green Schools meeting. We all decided to go to the turlough every month to see the birds and to look at the bug hotel. The first day we went to the turlough we saw lots of birds. The second day at the turlough we saw no birds. The birds we saw were the blackbird, swallows, ducks, swans, willy wagtails, golden plovers, geese and lots more. On the second day the water was so high that we could not even go into the turlough. Next time we go back we hope will we see lots more birds then before and hopefully it won’t be flooded like last time.

Our Christmas Concert

Every Friday since September we practiced The Evolution of Dance. There were lots of different stages to the dance so it took a while, but fortunately Christina was very patient. Luckily, we got the hang of it pretty quickly.

Two months before the concert (October), we started rehearsing the cup song by itself and the singing by itself. It took a while to practice as we had to get the co-ordination correct. It took ages to perfect it.

There were lots of different scenes in our play and everyone had to have a part. This is the order of which they were in:

  • Pope Francis
  • The visitors to Ireland as part of The Gathering
  • Clare win the Liam McCarthy Cup,
  • Galway win the O’Duffy Cup,
  • The Healthy Eating Policy and
  • One Direction.
It was very hard going but we got there in the end.

We spent all day practicing down at the hall on the 17th of December. We had to wait a while for our turn as the other classes went first. We were lucky as we got extra time to rehearse because the younger classes went home early. We were also a bit unlucky as we had to help setting up the hall. The entire concert lasted around 5 hours. It was our turn next. First we did the drama, then the cup song and finally the dance. It was all over pretty quickly. We had great fun. It was just a shame we had school the next day.

Our trip to the Turlough

On a cold day in December, we hoped weather would stay dry for our journey to the turlough. After lunch we met Susan, the bird watcher from An Taisce in our classroom. She told us about the fascinating birds in the Rahasane Turlough. After the discussion we walked to the turlough. Once we got to our destination, Susan took out her telescope and showed us the birds flying over the water. We lined up to have our own view. We were sad to see lots of rubbish in the bushes. Once everyone had their go we sadly started walking back to the school. On the way back we saw a big oak tree. Finally we reached the school and we took off our dirty wellies. It was the best day ever and everyone enjoyed it.
