Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee

Back in February 5th and 6th class went down to the hall to see who would represent our school in the 2014 Easons/RTÉ County Galway spelling bee. There were easy, medium and hard spellings. It was tough but finally Ellie Greally was crowned Killeeneen N.S 2014  Spelling Bee champion. In second place was Ultan Sheeran followed by Alice McMahon from our class. Unfortunately Alice was knocked out by the word noncompliance.

A report on Ellie's County Final Spelling Bee can be found here.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is on Saturday morning and is from 9:30 to 11:00. You are on computers for 40 minutes and then you get a 10 minute break. In Khan Academy you have your own computer and you can decide what maths topic you want to do like time and more. The is also another class at 11:30. There are three teachers and they help you if there is a problem with your computer.

Khan Academy is a website. We do it on Saturday for an hour and a half. It is really helpful for our maths and other subjects like science and physics. There are three really nice teachers there to help us and one guy used to work in Killeeneen National School. We can watch a short video if we are stuck on a maths question. We have a short 5 minute break. There is a daily challenge where you can earn points and badges. We can do it at home as well.

Camógie training

Camógie started back on the 26th of February after school from 3:15 to 4:15. Our coaches Ms. Kelly and Ms. Cooney are working hard to prepare us for Mini 7s in March. We also did camógie training from September to Hallowe’en, multiple times every week both during school and after school. By: Aoife and Lauren.

Olympic Handball Final 25/2/14

We got to the county final stage in handball when another school dropped out. Ten of us went - Anna, Niamh, Helena, Alice, Tomó, Sophia, Conal, Christopher, Robin Pfeiffer and Luke S. Our first match was against Baile Nua. Unfortunately we lost 2-1. In our second match we hammered GMA 5-2. Niamh scored two goals and Tomó and Luke scored one each, Our man-marking tactic worked superbly. In our last match against Clarinbridge, we had to win or we were out. Sadly we lost 2-0. We had a great day out and hopefully next year Ms. Cooney will enter an U-13 team as well as an U-12 team. By: Anna (Man-marker), Helena (Defender) and Robin (Goalie).

Olympic Handball Tournament 13/2/2014

At half past nine, we boarded the bus and drove to Mervue. When we arrived at the court, Clarinbridge Team Two were playing Craughwell. Then it was our turn to play. At first we weren’t playing well as we were down one nil, but we went on to win three-one with Tomó scoring twice and Alice scoring once. The next match we played was against Galway Educate Together. We were down two nil but again we came back to win three-two. There was great passing by Christopher and great goals by Conal and Michael. The next match we drew against a team we don’t know (Braon didn’t write the names of the teams). We had plenty of shots but were unlucky. Tomó would have got man of the match but unfortunately got injured. Otherwise it was generally great play by Killeeneen. The next match was against Galway Educate Together Team Two which we unfortunately lost three-one. There was great goalkeeping by Sophia and a super goal by Niamh. There was fantastic play by the whole team and good sportsmanship. The next game was against Clarinbridge Team 2. We drew one-one with Tomó and Owen Lyons scoring. The next two matches we lost then we drew two-two and then we lost three nil to Clarinbridge. Match Reports

Green Schools Committee

We have had one Green Schools meeting. We all decided to go to the turlough every month to see the birds and to look at the bug hotel. The first day we went to the turlough we saw lots of birds. The second day at the turlough we saw no birds. The birds we saw were the blackbird, swallows, ducks, swans, willy wagtails, golden plovers, geese and lots more. On the second day the water was so high that we could not even go into the turlough. Next time we go back we hope will we see lots more birds then before and hopefully it won’t be flooded like last time.
